CD Reviews

Classic 1970s country/folk/rock

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I played the First Fire album a lot back in college, so I was glad to find this CD. I kept doing Google searches on old bands I liked to see if they were still around. The searches for "First Fire" kept turning up "Jemima Puddleduck," which at first I thought was a mistake. It turns out Jamima Puddleduck was First Fire's previous name. The album I listened to in college was recorded after this CD. This CD is classic 1970s country/folk/rock. The CD shares many songs with the later First Fire album, but these earlier performances have a country/folk influence that the jazz-influenced later recordings lacked. This CD contains the band's better performances. The product description is no exaggeration, the magic is captured on this CD. The best tracks are "Pine in the Wind," "Love at First Fire," "Country Morning," "All the Way Home," and "Abby," although "Hairy Legs and Hiking Boots" is an unexpected gem. "Held by You" is the only weak track. This CD compares well to the better country/rock recordings of the era. It's a shame it wasn't released on vinyl when it was originally recorded, but we're lucky it's finally available three decades later."
