CD Reviews

It's the Dirty Street Trooper, Dirty Beat Looper, 33-and-a-t
D. Waldron | Anchorage, AK | 11/20/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Wow....I'm honestly amazed nobody has written a review on this album. Yes, Jehst is obscure, yes he's from the UK and virtually unknown in America, but Falling Down is an amazing piece of work.

This is underground hip-hop at its best. Creative lyrics, amazing beats, and quality production. Stylistically, the album is fairly dark. Most of the beats are eerie, and Jehst's mind often wanders into the darker depths of the imagination. However, some of the songs are pleasantly upbeat, and Jehst compliments those cuts with playful lyrics. He is by no means a downer, just cynical I'd say.

Lyrically, the closest comparison I could make to Jehst would be a mix between Aesop Rock and MF Doom. He definitely has the imagination and stream-of-consciousness flow similar to Aesop, but he also has Doom's sometimes slick and goofy style of lyricism, accompanied by a confident swagger. So if you like those artists, I'd say you should give Jehst a try.

Favorite verse:

"Scuba dive with Neptune, Mars's sparring partner, I spit bars of molten lava, laws of karma, jaws of piranha, skin of an iguana, laughter like hyenas.Dark lord of the deep sleepers, bout to blow like cheap speakers. We creatures screaming: "sweet jesus," but nothing can save ya, nothing but flavor, running the length of the equator" (trust me, I could go on....but it sounds much better than it reads I'm sure).

Favorite tracks: Liquor Soaked Sentiments, Manimals, Dirty (Check it out Now), Citizen Smif.

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I had the chance, but I will round it up because Jehst is dope.
