CD Reviews

Rather wonderful and beautiful
Steven Guy | Croydon, South Australia | 02/15/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is the sort of thing I like to listen to late at night when I am relaxing. The singer is expressive, convincing and effective in her communication of the songs and their sentiments. Jeanne Cherhal takes some chances with her voice and does shy away from attacking some of songs with some force, albeit it tasteful and controlled force.

"Je suis liquide" features electric guitars and is, perhaps, adamant.

"Rondes l'armes" has a more "chatty" style with some subdued instrumental accompaniment, note: no drums or percussion in this song.

"Voilà" sounds like it features acoustic, electric and bass guitars and some drums.

I could go on describing the songs (I don't normally like to do that). L'Eau is a beautiful album, full of interesting and colourful songs. Jeanne Cherhal expresses tenderness, love, anger and that indefinable French chutzpah throughout this album. I have gone out and bought a couple of her other albums on the strength of L'Eau.

Suffice it to say that Jeanne Cherhal puts more expression into one song than Norah Jones does on an entire album. L'Eau is the kind of album singers like Norah Jones can only dream of making.

I hope a few more people take a chance on mademoiselle Cherhal. Believe me, it is worth the effort!"
Catchy French music

"I picked this CD up as a gift for my wife in Paris after listening to it briefly at a play station at Finak at the Place d' Bastille. Just that one song-skipping time was enough to attract me to the music. Needless to say, we both really like it. It's innovative and catchy. Her diction is very clear and the music is playful and uplifting. I find myself listening to it intently even when I have it playing in the background while reading or doing housework.

There are a few songs I like more than others but I agree with the prior reviewer that critiquing each song individually is rarely helpful for it is really a matter of taste. If you like pop music in general and you want to hear something refreshing and different, try Jeanne Cherhal's "l'eau." You won't be disappointed."
