Kuusisto (pronounced KOOsisto) is a superb young Finnish violinist whose first recording goes right to the top of the list. This is an exceptionally fine modern recording of Sibelius' great Violin Concerto-it is so effortlessly natural, so sure of where it is going, that there's no point in comparing it to other versions. A lot of the credit must also go to Segerstam who not only accompanies with extraordinary care, but also does the other two works as well as they ever have been. Putting more Sibelius on the disc rather than some other violin concerto keeps the emphasis where it belongs: on the composer. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

The best modern recording of Sibelius
E. Vinogradova | DC USA | 11/26/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Sibelius's violin concerto in D minor is one of my favorite pieces of music and I have a few different recordings of it. I just bought this one inspired by glowing reviews - and I have to say I quite agree with them! It is an absolutely superb version! It has just the right mix of melancholy, romanticism and passion. Kuusisto deserves his reputation. I highly recommend this CD."
Sibelius Violin Concerto played by Pekka Kuusisto
Connie Rogers | Cincinnati, OH USA | 12/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Hearing this Sibelius Violin Concerto in concert with the young Finnish violinist Pekka Kuusisto was one of the most memorable performances I have ever heard. I purchased the CD at the intermission and had him sign it. He was very happy to be in Cincinnati, and felt privileged to be playing with such a great orchestra. I have since purchased the CD from Amazon for others to glory in this marvelous interpretation of the work. I have revisited other recordings of this concerto since, but none holds a candle to the beauty and imagery of Pekka Kuusisto's performance."
