CD Reviews

One of the best albums of 2002
Bill Stella | Somerville, NJ USA | 07/19/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Something unique among Out Gay musicians: A masculist, making mostly fun pop music, including the song "I Like Mike" (BUT, OF COURSE!!!), whose video is now (in 2004) making its way around film festivals to great acclaim."

"While the songs are lyrically fun and catchy, the production quality on this CD is, well...poor at best. I think he might have made this in his basement. However it is a lyrically catchy. A good first try but just try to download the, "I Like Mike," song you hear on LOGO (if you can find it) first."
What's Not To Like?

"I first encountered Jay a few years back, when LOGO was playing his popular video "I Like Mike" in heavy rotation. A catchy, funny, hook-filled song that took the "nudge-wink" factor found in a lot of randy pop tunes and smacked it out of the park, with a little "twist on the ball" for good measure, it's a tough song not get addicted to...no matter who you are. The rest of the album has similar songs that vary in quality to the charms of "Mike", but unless you're a rabid Right-Winger or a really close-minded straight person, there's no reason not to give Jay and his music a try. It definitely has that "taped in my buddy's garage" kind of feel to it, and the production is not the highest quality. But the most remarkable thing about Jay is the gimmick he uses to drive the songs, presenting himself as a laid-back, easygoing troubadour who just happens to be a "guy's guy" who writes comical, sweet (and sometimes bittersweet) and even romantic songs about...other guys. Hearing it a few years later, it strikes me now that Jay is a singer/songwriter who was then ahead of his time, and thank goodness we're finally catching up to him!"
