Album DescriptionCathedral is a unique work incorporating aural tapestries and images, channeling these elements through the compositions. Rubenstein, primarily a composer and classically trained musician, has recently had his soundtrack debut on the documentary 100 Visions. The title track "Cathedral," in it's demo stage, was used for a promotional spot NBC aired for the drama series ER. On this album, Rubenstein explores many moods, but undeniably the prevailing mood is contemplative, and sometimes even sinister - with a gothic bent, as exemplified by songs like "Invocation" and "The Gate." Although Rubenstein is a man who holds a bachelors degree in Computer Sciences, he does not shy away from analog or vintage equipment or sounds. He includes samples of a Moog model 55 modular synthesizer on "Invocation" and revamps "Siobhan," a traditional Celtic song. What makes the album cohesive and at the same time exciting and diverse are the ways in which Rubenstein is able to blend seemingly disparate genres and elements: digital-analog, past-future. With the current market glut of music commonly referred to as electronica and ambient, there are only a few artists that rise to distinction. Rubenstein's compositions are both distinctive and embraceable. His musicianship is first rate and his choice of accompanying players on the album impeccable. Cathedral features Rubenstein on piano, keyboard, moog and a plethora of other electronic pianos and synthesizers. Roman Morykit of the band Gypsy Soul is featured on bass and David Carol-Libman performs on drums, acoustic and electronic percussion and programming.
