CD Reviews

Janet Blair's earlier efforts a preview of greater to come

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Although I'm happy to see Janet Blair's earlier big band recordings were restored and re-released for musical posterity, this isn't the best she's ever been, IMO. She had a powerful rich voice in younger years, but rose to become a much more elegant, sophisticated, smoky and soulful singer later on when "Flame Out" was released in 1959. Rare to find this release on CD any more since not as many current music lovers know about her, but well worth it if you can get a hold of a copy. She does some very nicely orchestrated and arranged versions of standards on this like "Autumn Leaves", "Can't Help Loving That Man of Mine", "Get Outta Town" and others all done with a torch singer quality. Also a classic album cover of her leaning in to and becoming a red flame in an oil-painted fire!"
