CD Reviews

Great performances

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am a big fan of the operas of Janacek and I have another version of Osud or Fate by Mackerras but for some reason her recorded the opera in English and not in Czech as his did all of the operas and Janacek needs to be heard in Czech since he studied how to apply his language to music. Osud is far removed from the world of Jenufa's proletarian world of the mill being set in a spa where Janacek stayed to recover after losing his daughter. The plot is not linear but includes many different character and scenes but it holds together very well. The music in the opening scenes is extraordinarily constructed with a highly charged social atmosphere using waltz music. Osud was an expiment into Janacek's later style using juxtapositions and collage that I believe works. The love scenes are quite beautiful with the soprano Dite Milly well sung by Jarmla Palicona but the standout performance is by the tenor Zivny Vilem Pribyl who brought tears to my eyes. As always Janacek mastery of the chorus is quite evident here. The use of solo flute, piano and clarinet show Janacek' mastery of the opera, this best Osud that I have heard with great conducting by Jilek.

Even if I this opera is not one his masterpieces it has a lot of engaging music.

Please excuse any typos I have a neurologic disease.
