Jah Wobble, certified weirdo, strikes gold

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I was entirely taken with his 2001 release, Passage to Hades, featuring that British free-jazz iconoclast, Evan Parker. I'm even more taken with this disc.

Frankly, I don't know if there's ever been anything quite like it in the history of recorded music. Combining drum 'n' bass, trance, drone, improv, world jazz, and ambient space music, the sonic palette itself is worth the price of admission. Featuring many of the same musicians that graced Passage to Hades (Clive Bell on an assortment of standard and weird instruments; Jean-Pierre Rasle, ditto; and the great free-jazzin' Mark Sanders, drums), the soundscape is quite different than that latter disc--more spacey, sci/fi-ish, and outré.

I haven't heard the first iteration of this music, so I can't compare it to that. On its own merits, however, it is entirely compelling, at least to these ears. One I'm going to be coming back to often, I'm sure."
Deeper space than your brain, or whatever that means.....

"Saw Jah Wobble/Deep Space/and the master Bill Laswell last eve. at the Knitting factory in nyc. (may 14th 2001) what ever brain i had left prior to this show was left in absolute awe afterwards. Listening to the deep dubby bass (s) and jajouka pipes in dub blew my mind."
Scruffy and unwashed...

"In as much as its predecessor "Deep Space" was a sparkling gem of musical and mystical enlightment, "Beach Fervour Spare" sorely lacks artist commitment and inspiration. Notably the first track drags a bit and sets the scene for what is to come; the overall feel is like a Sunday morning after a night of excess. Nevertheless, the new drummer and guitar player set some highlights - ...may be the next time..."
