His mellow rhymes and vivid portrayal of everyday life separates him from other rappers of his day. J. Cole was born in West Germany but moved to North Carolina when he was only a year old. After high school, J. Cole went to New York with the intention of getting a record deal. After numerous mixtape appearances, a buzz started growing about this Magna Cum Laude graduate of St. Johns University. However, it was the song 'Lights Please' that really got Hova's attention and took J. Cole to the next level and impending stardom. Just like his predecessors such as Lupe Fiasco and Drake, J.
