CD Reviews

MORE THAN JUST A BANDLEADER
Barry McCanna | Normandy, France | 02/16/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This follows Rivermont's practice of meticulous remastering and presentation, with an excellent illustrated liner note by Rich Conaty. It spans the period from late 1923 to mid-1932, and fills in a number of gaps left by previous reissues; there is only one duplicate (Riverboat Shuffle) with the Timeless CD issued in 2000. Isham Jones was more than just a bandleader, he also played tenor sax and was an excellent composer. Added to that, he'd been recording since mid-1920 and it's apparent that he knew how to score for his band and position his players in the studio in order to get the best result. The first two tracks have a novelty element about them, with Frank Quartell's muted trumpet fulfilling the onomatopoeic title of the first, and Louis Panico producing growl effects combined with a rising slur in the second. The recording of "Riverboat Shuffle" was clearly influenced by the Wolverines seminal version, including Bix's famous solo. The two most dynamic sides are "Susie's Feller" and "Meadowlark" when the supposition is that Jones fronted a Reser group for recording purposes. I could go on at length, because every track has something of interest, but why not just buy it and have the fun of finding that out for yourself?"
