CD Reviews

CAUTION!! Airborne Chunks of Trachea!
S. Flask | the Pequod | 06/23/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Holy crow! First of all, this album is easily worth twice the price for the vocal delivery ALONE. I mean loads of bands can scream their heads off, but this guy is ab-so-lute-ly AMAZING! It's this totally disgusting, whisky driven vocal purging AND it's one of the most original deliveries in extreme music. With that out of the way, we get to the rest of this. Now, these guys aren't going to win any awards for progressive, innovative song structures, but that's certainly not the point. They lay down some seriously heavy riffs, at times slower than molasses. And the drummer sounds better the slower he plays! These guys pull off what 99% of people playing the SAME music would fail at: they can play slow, unoriginal music with such a powerful delivery that it sounds like nothing you've ever heard. That's what makes this record work - the sheer power. Between the doomed out, tooth shattering riffs, the percussive pounding and the lurid vocal delivery, Iron Monkey gives you 6 of the best stoner/doom/sludge/whatever tracks you'll ever hear.Fans of EHG, High on Fire, Cathedral, Goatsnake or even Sleep will just crumble before this!"
Iron monkeys are the best kind of monkeys

"I cannot understand what anyone who has any interest whatsoever in Eyehategod and other bands of their ilk would be unable to appreciate Iron Monkey. This album is fantastic, if not a bit short... but then its an EP so I guess I don't have much to complain about in that area either. Simply amazing. What else is there to say?"
Why does nobody understand?

"As I peruse the depths of Iron Monkey reviews all I see is abuse which stems from a lack of understanding. Although slightly bias it does seem i am the only person to get the tongue-in-cheek nature of the band (check out the sites. Although I accept the Eyehategod similarities the sheer evil of Johnny's vocals and, contrary to some veiws, the quality of Andy Sneap's production this is a fantastic AND ultimately audaciously original album. Iron Monkey, we mourn your loss, "fink-dial" and the almighty "big loader" highlight the much maligned and under-rated genius of thesee Nottingham criminals..."
