Banquet in the Darkness

(4 out of 5 stars)

"It seems as though most death metal acts utilize a rather linear sense of musicianship, leaning on the splintered crutch of both credibility and predictabiliy. While not this necessarily a bad thing (I personally love the straight ahead sound of modern death metal), it is always refreshing to see a band stray even slightly from formulaic Incantation worship. Standing as one of the strongest black / death metal bands in the genre, Intestine Baalism have no problem injecting a bit of melody and progression into their otherwise unrelenting sound. While opener "Flesh for the Twelfth Omnipotent" rages on with its opressive death metal riffs, "Banquet in the Darkness" follows up as one of the best songs At the Gates never wrote; even look for some of the guitar parts on the latter portion of the album to have a Dan Swano-esque quality to them (think more his solo work and less Edge of Sanity). Throw in masterful playing on all fronts and some more than competent lyrics, and you've got one hell of a record. For the death metal purist crowd, 'Banquet in the Darkness' will quench your thirst for some relative brutality, but fans of heavy music in general are guarenteed to find something they will love about this record.
