Piano pyrotechnics--Stravinsky works for two pianos

"This is a tour de force of virtuosic pianism and an insightful interpretation of Stravinsky's best known works. Achatz's executes this ambitious project admirably. While the Rite of Spring loses much of its power as a transcribed piano suite, the sounds both soloists elicit from their instruments are astonishing. The Firebird suite shines. The transcription tends to flesh out melodies lost in the orchestra and also demonstrates how much Stravinsky owes to Mussorgsky, Glinka, and Rimsky-Korsakoff."
