Synopsis

Album Description
2 on 1 CD featuring the best of the acclaimed singer-songwriter's 80s albums. Although associated with folk-rock due to his time spent as frontman with Fairport Convention, Plainsong and Southern Comfort, Matthews' solo output has always stylistically varied and been difficult to pin down, and these are no exception- the first flirting openly with the power pop sound of XTC, Squeeze, Bram Tchaikovsky et al, the second an excursion into minimalist synthesized New Wave. Sadly, he never received enough acclaim for these experiments, but the albums are worthy of investigation- especially in this digitally remastered slipcase format with brand new notes. BGO. 2005.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Disc 1, "spot of interference" is out of the late 70's-early 80's, I had picked up a vinyl copy about then and it quickly became one of my all time favorites, but someone ripped it off at a party years back, having just found it on cd, it's like finding a long lost friend, the music, well it's not Southern Comfort, believe or not, THIS DISC ROCKS!, it has a bit of a "pop" feel to it, the closest I can describe it is a mixture of Humble Pie and Crabby Appleton glance at Christopher Milk, great guitar riffs, solid songs, strong lyrics, you will want to get up and dance! Disc 2, this one is new to me, I am still working it in, it is not at all like dics 1, it is almost pure tecno pop, the echo chamber is used a lot, some song have a far east feel to them, don't get me wrong, it's good, it's like, Be Bop Deluxe, maybe a little mild. "Spot of Interference" is a real guitar rock album, not like some of these pretenders out there, It will get into your ears, your feet and your musical soul!"
