Synopsis

Album Description
On their third full-length album, genre bending duo Hungry Lucy prove to us, yet again, that the confines of one musical style just won't contain them. "To Kill a King" seamlessly traverses the musical spectrum from somber darkwave to catchy pop without missing a beat. Fans of Hungry Lucy's first two releases, "Apparitions" and "Glo", will not be disappointed with this fresh batch of inspired electro-organic productions crowned with Christa Belle's haunting voice. The title track, "To Kill a King" couples a driving Depeche Mode styled production with emotional female vocals. While "Rainfall" evokes the electrified songwriter feel of Dido or even Madonna in her more contemplative moments. The uplifting vibe of "Shine" pulls together elements from around the globe with a soaring vocal melody. The melancholy "Good Girl" is a stripped down piano & vocal wonder that tugs hard at your emotions, while the pure synthetic "High Price of Mistakes" manages to sound icy cold, yet emit a warm glow all at once. It's this type of beautiful contrast that Hungry Lucy are passionate about, and fully demonstrate on "To Kill a King". Their talent for blending the familiar with the exotic captures you at first listen and leaves you wanting more.

BETTER THAN THEIR LAST RELEASE
C. M Torres | In the United States | 11/06/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

""To Kill a King", the title track on Hungry Lucy's third album is by far the best and most creatively written song on the entire album; but not representative of the album as a whole, either in terms of musical style or lyrical composition. Musically, this album runs a gamut of musical styles, from recognizable trip hop, to piano led compostions, to minimalist, slow beat electronica with a folky new age style reminiscent of Love Spirils Downwards. Lyrically, there are songs of triumph and tragedy, inspiration and desolation, survival and sorrow. As a novelty, the album is supposed to represent an integrated whole consisting of pieces that elaborate the tale of a queen and her escape from a King and lifestyle that feels alien to her. In my opinion, it doesn't really work. I don't feel like I'm listening to the score of an opera or musical, but to an album of individual songs. Each song feels like it stands alone and the diversity of musical styles and themes from song to song lends this impression. There are thirteen tracks and four remixes of four songs. Additional remixes of tracks on this ablum are available from the Reigndance EP available exclusively from alfamatix at www.alfa-matrix.com. The lyrics to all hungry lucy songs are available on their website www.hungrylucy.com. I recommend this album to people who like trip hop, darkwave, goth-pop, projekt music, or introspective, emotionally evocative lyrics. I don't really think this is their best album yet, 'Apparitions' made a stronger impression on me, but perhaps because I had never heard them before."
HUNGRY LUCY'S BEST ALBUM YET!

"To Kill A King is one of the years best dark trip hop cds. The cd tells the tale of a lonely and miserable Queen who desperately seeks to be free from the cruel bondage of her King. The Insert of the cd booklet gives you the storyline that follows the tracklisting beautifully. The songs are all emotive and filled with such eleborate beauty that just makes this cd breathtaking. I was a fan of the bands first album APPARITIONS and liked GLO...But, This album is by far the best one yet! Some people consider this music gothic trip hop or Dark Electronica...But, to me, this cd is just beautiful. There really is no LABEL to put on it. Check out WWW.CDBABY.COM for sound samples of the album if you hate buying cds without hearing them first. This album is an excellent addition to any collection of gorgeous soundscapes. The cd even comes with 4 remixes of songs, which are excellent!"
Subtle gothic journey

"This is the first CD by Hungry Lucy that I've listened to, and for me it was an acquired taste. On the first couple of listens I found it intriguing but not exactly compelling ... but for some reason I kept putting it back in my Discman ... and gradually and then suddenly I was loving it. The title tune is the one that sticks in your head most, but for me all the songs on this story cycle CD are memorable and unique. To me, this needs to be digested as a whole, as we follow the female protagonist in her journey from "killing" her king to forgiving him. We're traveling with this character on her internal trek. This is really not overtly "gothic" music, although it can generally be put in that category; it is sad and even somewhat mournful, and I kept envisioning medieval castles and landscapes as I listened. The title song is actually quite triumphant in tone and there are some enjoyable remixes which are actually dance-trance music. I've just gotten HL's "Apparitions" based on my love for "To Kill a King," which overall I've found to be a very nourishing, satisfying listen."
