CD Reviews

Um dos mais importantes conjuntos instrumentais da década
Peppino | 02/25/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"..'back in the old days' as said in the typical cliché was "Opa", the legendary trio from grande Uruguai and moved to New York , with their unique brand of instrumental (and sometime vocal) fusion of funk, jazz, rock (from the incubatory days in Montevideo as Los Shakers) along with the folcloric sounds of Uruguai, mainly the candombé ritmo and murga.

Uruguai is not just Gardel, 1950 (sorry futebol maniacs!) and recently, Jorge Drexler! the fratelli Fatturuso, Ringo and El Negro can never be forgotten, their good humor and contribution to musics 'em geral'!

Hugo Fattoruso on piano/teclados, the main composer /improvisor also was member of Airto's most famous "Fingers" grupo, and is one of the world's most unheralded composers/músicos. Not just a friend of Brasil, but fully emmersed in brasil is mester Hugo, along with the sounds of his motherland, and also the tunes of the Beatles! (a surprise track is included in this recording, you see what I mean!)

Here is a recording, stripped down to piano/teclados/acordeon, only mestre Hugo, and is a wonderful display of his pianistics and compositions.

A master of melody, harmony and form, Hugo makes inventive chord voicings and , although he can really "run it down" (com uma baita ginga!), he is a master improvisor , always telling a story with his improvisations. And, as piano is also a percussion instrument, you hear 'the drum' in every musical gesture..

My favourite Hugo Fattoruso recording currently being "held hostage" in the unreleased Som da Gente catalogue, but, as I am um fanzaço for the sounds of Sinhô Fattu', I can only recommend not only this personal recording, but also, his other solo sounds, the "Opa" two for one of course, and Airto's "Fingers" and "Identity" where you will hear the most pleasant sounds.

viva o som sempre! 1000 stars over the Southern Cross, another 1000 in the Northern Skies!"
