CD Reviews

As good as soul gets!

"You may not have heard of Howard Tate but you've probably heard his songs. Tracks on this amazing Lp have been covered by Janis Joplin (get it while you can), Jimi Hendrix (stop), Ry Cooder (look at grany run run) and BB king (ain't nobody home). The material is top notch soul, The musicians are all amazing and the vocal performance is Stellar. I say all this without hyperbole! If you like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, BB king etc this will become your favorite LP in no time. Howard Tate is one of the best soul singers of all time. Not to be missed."
Why can't we have this splendid CD easily ?

"Howard Tate has a solid and soulful voice with a fine falsetto, and was a great soul generator of the late 60s' Philadelphia. Despite his lack of hits, he is a potential singer equal to soul greats like Otis, Pickett or Solomon. This CD contains his Verve years produced by Jerry Ragovoy, one of great east-coast soul composer-producers like Bert Berns. Howard later released songs at Atlantic and Turntable label which are easier to get than Verve ones. I dare say that this Verve tunes should be released unlimitedly and should be got easier than now. The lack of his songs is not only the manufucturer's loss but our loss."

"A soul Classic... Otis wasn't kidding when he called it the bible of soul-

The hip-o-select reissue is really somthing... you get the stereo and mono versions of Tate's singles, along with a few bonus tracks.

A must for any follower of great soul music-
