Synopsis

Album Description
Wendy Warner is one of the most exciting players of the new generation of cello virtuosi. She performs regularly throughout the United States both with orchestras and in recital. This recording demonstrates her impeccable musicianship and skill, performing Hindemith's complete chamber works for cello. The Sonata for Solo Cello, Op. 25 No. 3 is a fascinating work, with the composer's unique brand of harmony, and Warner makes the most of the eerily calm slow movement. Both works for cello and piano are here as well- the Sonata, Op. 11 No. 3 and the Sonata of 1948, showing the composer as a developing master, and at his most mature. Also included are the fun Variations on "A Frog He Went A-Courtin" and the early Capriccio, the closest thing to a pop tune that Hindemith ever wrote.

CD Reviews

This is an outstanding debut recording of deserving music .

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This new release by Bridge Records marks the debut recording by cellist Wendy Warner and pianist Eileen Buck--and what a debut it is! Listeners who enjoy Paul Hindemith's highly organized and yet lyrical counterpoint will welcome this unusual compilation of the important sonatas and other works which Hindemeith wrote for the cello, both accompanied and unaccompanied. Both artists approach these works with energy, skill and affection, resulting in exciting performances of music which, in most hands, seldom engages the listener. Special mention is due producer/engineer/editor Max Wilcox, whose expert hand fashioned a disk of Grammy quality.Incidentally, it seems that the Capriccio and the "Variations on 'A Frog Went A-courting'" are not other wise currently available on CD's."

"Wendy Warner is a first-rate cellist and here she applies her ample talents to an underappreciated segment of the cello repertoire. Her approach is warm and empathetic while highly intelligent. This is a release every cello enthusiast should be interested in."
