CD Reviews

Bossa Nova, Hi-Lo's Style!
Brian H. Williams | Manteca, CA United States | 01/03/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I waited years for this classic Reprise album to finally be reissued. I'm pleased to say that the remastering is excellent and the album doesn't disappoint! These were the only two albums that the Hi-Lo's did for Reprise before disbanding. They are both excellent albums, but for me, the main attraction is the Bossa Nova album. The Hi-Lo's are right at home within this latin jazz idiom. With liner notes by Laurindo Almeida (who, turns up actually on That Gold Brazilian Sun) and top notch arranging by Chuck Sagle, you have a winning combination. My favorite track is the Oscar Castro-Neves classic "Cry Your Sadness." Other versions by Walter Wanderley and Shorty Rogers doesn't seem to capture tha magic that the Hi-Lo's bestow upon this wonderful song. The best instrumental version of this song belongs to Jo Basile, in his recording with The Bossa Tres. The Hi-Lo's version is the only vocal version that I know of. The lyrics tell a sweet story about a girl who has lost her love and that one day, the tears she sheds will one day be tears of joy. It's easily the highlight of this great album. Rush out and grab this one!"

"Lively harmony set to bossa nova. Pure enjoyment.

The folk song section was okay. I am not a lover of Folk but enjoy most standards."
