"Henri Herz was evidently a very popular composer in the middle of the 19th century. Even Schumann complained about how much money Herz made from the music he wrote, while more 'worthy' composers had to suffer low prices paid for their music.



To be sure, the piano concerti on this disc are not heaven-storming romantic masterpieces. But they are quite enjoyable to listen to and are well written. As reflected in his writing for the piano, Herz must have had a brilliant technique. This is by no means easy music to play, especially with the grace and wit that the music asks for.



I cannot imagine any pianist playing this music better than Howard Shelley. He has the technique and musicianship that really brings out all that is enjoyable in it, and the Tasmanian Symphony orchestra plays very well under his direction also.
