Marston's subtitle, "Dramatic Coloratura Tenor," is a clue to the vocal fireworks on these discs. Jadlowker (1877-1953) was one of those thrill-a-minute Golden Age singers who tossed off vocal feats that shouldn't be possible for so hefty a voice. He shows off his amazing coloratura technique in "Fuor del mar" from Mozart's Idomeneo; another of his most famous recordings, "Ecco ridente," from Rossini's Barber of Seville, offers enough spectacular trills and runs to fill an opera season, while his ravishing head voice is heard to fine effect in Goldmark's "Magische Töne" from The Queen of Sheba. There's much that's coarse and unstylish in his burly approach, too, but opera fans will want this well-transferred set of an outstanding singer. --Dan Davis
