"Herb Ellis, of Oscar Peterson fame and the leader of the Steve Allen Show Band. Among other things. An excellent comp guitarist of the highest order. Try it you'll like it. But, remember his forte is comping. He lets others to the real serious stretching out. Nicely done Herb."

"especially for those who like good mainstream or bop guitar, albeit with a southwestern flavor, and jazz harmonica.

Herb Ellis was 76 at the time of this live recording and sounded in top form. He always comps well behind the other players but with tunes like "Limehouse Blues" and "Bye Bye Bay" where he swings right out of the gate, he also shows how he established himself as a major jazz guitarist with Oscar Peterson so many years ago!

Enough can't be said for the vituosity of Hendrik Muerkens who is the only challenger to Toots Thielemans on that instrument. In my opinion they are so close in skill that I wouldn't bet money on who is playing on any given recording. Just as Toots can play the guitar, Hendrik shows that he is equally talented at playing vibes on "Wave".

A thoroughly enjoyable set!"
