Synopsis
Album Description Slide Man lists 15 tracks, 14 of which were written by Cooper himself, and showcases his talent as an exceptional harp player. Surrounding him is an outstanding trio of musicians: Andrew Larsen (who contributes some peerless Hammond B3 work), and the rock-solid rhythm section of bassist Eric Bryson and drummer Andrew Cloutier. Working hard to have an identifiable sound that he can call his own, Cooper only plays in open tunings and wears his metal slide on his ring finger. |
CD ReviewsHenry Cooper, Bluesman for the Millenium 12/06/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "Henry Cooper surpasses his excellent first album (Baby Please) with Slide Man. Mr. Cooper once again demonstrates why he is the quintessential blues craftsman of our generation. His passion for his material is only exceeded by his skill with his guitar. This album is the rare opportunity to enjoy the blossoming talents of a person who is soon to be a major star." Sliding up the scale Cletis Carr | Nashville, TN | 12/06/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "Seattle-based Henry Cooper's second release is a continuation of his passion for blues tradition, but delivered in a fresh setting. As in Henry's first album Baby Please, Slide Man is framed in a similar lean-n-mean production. The classic four-piece ensemble of slide guitar, Hammond organ, bass & drums leaves plenty of room for the (all but one) self-penned songs to breathe.Henry is self-admittedly not a powerhouse vocalist, such as say, Screamin' Jay Hawkins (in whose band Henry used to play). However he's confident enough as a player to let the music do most of the talking, as six instrumentals prove. Harmonica was Henry's first instrument, and his dynamite harp work is often overshadowed by his stunning slide guitar playing. From the opening guitartillery attack of "Keep Waitin", thru the surf sounds of "King Me", thru the Ledbelly-ish country blues of "No Fears", Slide Man is both retro and next generation music. Traditionalists will love it, and even music yuppies who only know blues through the likes of Robert Cray will find plenty to groove and dance to. Get yours today."
