Synopsis

For all its pistol-packing pretensions, Heltah Skeltah's Magnum Force strikes more like a .22. It's a perfectly decent hip-hop album, but decent is about as exciting as it gets. The duo of Ruck and Rock are blessed with two of the more distinctive flows and voices in the rap world, but neither they nor their motley crew of producers are able to capitalize on it to any degree. Songs like "I Ain't Havin' That," "Magnum Force," and "Gunz 'n Onez" might peak your interest for a quick minute, but they quickly fade into obscurity. Ironically, some of the best moments on the album come in the form of skits like "2 Keys" and the hilarious "Call Tyrone" (following up on Erykah Badu's notorious song of the same name). --Oliver Wang

CD Reviews

THIS CD IS DA BOMB
05/26/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Ok, first off, the album starts off wonderfully with "Worldwide", and then leads up to other crazy songs like "Call of the Wild" and "I Ain't Havin' That." I would list all my personal favorties but that would be listing the whole CD. This CD right now is one of my best ones that I have, next to Kurupt and the Wu-Tang. Then Heltah Skeltah mixes it up by adding Tha Dogg Pound and having Method Man come on some of there tracks. Their beats and lyrics are excellent. For their beats I would give them a 10 out of 10. They were just fantastic. And my advice to everyone out there is to get this CD. LISTEN TO ME AND GET IT. It is worth its price."
THE MOST SLEPT ON GROUP AND ALBUM
06/18/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Heltah Skeltah, without a doubt, is one of the more original, clever, and (unfortunately) slept on groups out there. The production is incredible and once again Ruck and Rock bring something new to the table. They have the FUNNIEST skits in hip hop, and are creative with their rhymes...don't get me wrong, most folks who try to be creative can't pull it off, but Heltah Skeltah can, and do. Priority Records didn't do justice to this album by the shoddy way they promoted it. Once again, if you like tight tracks, gifted flows, and creativity you must buy this album."
