The works gathered here are "Easter Motet" (for mixed chorus, brass, and organ G), "Mass," "Madrigal," "They Say that Susan has no Heart for Learning" (for women's chorus and piano G), "Whitman Triptych," "Three Songs of Democracy," and "Symphony for Voices on Poems of Walt Whitman" (for mixed chorus a cappella). Harris is a natural for choral material because of his basic tunefulness. His ear for melody, however, never did allow for much complexity, so there aren't many tricks in Harris's music (or many different "sides" to his musical character). No matter. This is a distinct and valuable disc. -- Paul Cook

How hungry are you?
Robert L. Edwards | New York, NY United States | 10/10/2000
(1 out of 5 stars)

"Aficionados of underrated Roy Harris' music who hunger for more of his canon might find some value here. But insecure vocalisms and pitch problems coupled with a conductor who doesn't demonstrate he has a clue to the nature or character of the Harris style make listening to this CD a chore. Proceed with caution on this vanity CD."
