A Very Enjoyable Collection of Songs
Steve Vrana | Aurora, NE | 01/17/2001
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Bluegrass label CMH has been recycling its catalog in recent years , providing a number of well chosen various artist anthologies. This tribute to the father of bluegrass music is one of the best. With two dozen songs and a running time of 65 minutes, you get a generous sampling of songs either written by or popularized by Bill Monroe and His Bluegrass Boys between 1940 and 1962. [Specific recording information is not provided for each of these recordings, but the liner notes point out that all were recorded between 1976 and 1987.] Although released in 1996, the same year Monroe died just days before his 85th birthday, the album notes clearly indicate this was released before his death. The album is a fitting tribute. Many of these songs are performed by former Bluegrass Boys. Lester Flatt, Benny Martin, Sonny Osborne (of The Osborne Brothers), Buddy Spicher and Mac Wiseman are all alumni of Monroe's band. Future country star Marty Stuart provides mandolin on "Roanoke," one of seven instrumentals.Monroe's impact on bluegrass in incalculable. He has cast a deep and wide influence on the popular music landscape, as these artists attest. Although not specifically recorded as a tribute album, this is a wonderful bluegrass collection and will make a fine addition to your bluegrass library. RECOMMENDED"
