"I must give credit to Rough Guide for introducing me to Birtwistle or I never would have tried the CD. The triumph of time is a funeral dirge, titled for a painting of Breughel the Elder. It builds slowly and chillingly, using a theme on soprano sax seven times throughout the piece, symbolizing time's persistance over human life. It is emotionally shattering as is the elegiac Ritual Fragment. Gawain's Journey is an orchestral suite drawn from the opera after the premeire and it only makes me wish that Gawain was available. Gawain tells the story of his fight with the green Knight and is powerful even in the suite.
Pleas excuse typos I have a neurologic disease."
