Synopsis

Product Description
Document Chicago #10 ...Prolific young drummer/percussionist/composer Harris Eisenstadt has collaborated with a long list of notable composer/improvisers all over the world in a wide variety of formats and musical genres (including contemporary classical, jazz/improvised music, West African/Javanese dance, theater, and film scores) and on more than 25 recordings on 17 different labels. As LA Weekly's Greg Burk put it, "Harris Eisenstadt is a composer with limbs prodding into spontaneous, post-bop, and neoclassical. He works with the best." His fifth CD as a leader, The Soul and Gone, captures his young all-star sextet of the same name at Chicago's famed 3030.

CD Reviews

Stretching the boundaries of small-group jazz
N. Dorward | Toronto, ON Canada | 11/19/2005
(4 out of 5 stars)

"This is a slightly unusual date for Eisenstadt: he hails from Toronto, spent some time on the New York scene (where he studied with Barry Altschul, among others), then went out to the West Coast where he studied with Leo Smith & Vinny Golia. After several years there he's back in New York, though he seems also to be spending a lot of time in Europe lately (there's a disc with Simon Fell & Ian Smith due any moment now). He's probably best-known to jazz fans for his recent trio disc with Sam Rivers & Adam Rudolph, _Vista_. This disc finds him with fellow West-Coaster, saxophonist Jason Mears, in slightly unusual company, stopping in Chicago for a sextet gig with trombonist Jeb Bishop, vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, guitarist Jeff Parker & bassist Jason Roebke. It's a densely packed album that's not easy to grasp with a listen or two, but it repays the effort. The instrumenatation has a lovely, distinctive sound, which strongly reminds me of some of Jackie McLean's dates with Grachan Moncur III & Bobby Hutcherson, but also Karl Berger's work with John McLaughlin on _When Fortune Smiles_. Eisenstadt's ability to mix jazz, rock & world-music influences is well-displayed here, with my favourite piece being, of all things, a tribute to Henryk Gorecki! 482 Music has been releasing a consistently strong series of releases--many of them titled "Document Chicago", though since they virtually all document the Chicago scene I'm not sure why certain discs are in that series & others aren't. This one continues a strong run. If you enjoy it, I'd recommend checking out Aram Shelton's _Arrive_, which also features Adasiewicz & Roebke, & Ted Sirota's _Breeding Resistance_, which features Bishop & Parker (though I'm inclined to think the latter album is a bit uneven). Bishop, incidentally, is in crackling form on Eisenstadt's disc, which is good news for those of us who were saddened to hear that he'd temporarily retired from music due to tinnitus problems."
