Synopsis

Album Description
"The music strikes a fine balance between the austerity of the scenic `actions' so popular in the '60s with the lusher traditions of full-scale opera ... powerfully effective." -- New York TimesRare complete recording of Henze's 1972 "recital for four musicians," El Cimarrón, which means "runaway slave." This dramatic piece features a baritone portraying the real-life drama of a Cuban ex-slave named Esteban Montejo. Three instrumentalists, one of whom plays a large battery of percussion, back the singer. Bass Nicholas Isherwood is one of the leading singers of both early and contemporary music in the world today. He has worked with Joel Cohen, William Christie, Paul McCreesh, Nicholas McGegan, and many others.
