Synopsis

Album Description
"Though he hasn't achieved great fame, Hank Jones continues to leave his mark on jazz ? demonstrates his remarkable ability to adapt to any musical setting and shine." -NPR Hank and Frank, co-led by two of our most esteemed and treasured tribal elders, is a jewel guaranteed to appeal to all listeners as octogenarians Jones and Wess demonstrate that smooth, subtle, and swinging are still the main ingredients of classic jazz. Born in 1918, Hank Jones grew up in a household with some serious musical talent. Jones? earliest influence was pianist Fats Waller. He also idolized Earl "Fatha" Hines and the great Teddy Wilson, but his greatest influence was the legendary Art Tatum. A consummate freelancer, Jones has worked with Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Milt Jackson, and Julian Cannonball Adderly. His dynamic and diverse recordings reinterpret jazz in all of its varieties. The genetic makeup of sax and flute legend Frank Wess is pure jazz. Though best known for his years with Count Basie, he has also had stints with the Billy Eckstine Orchestra, Eddie Heywood, Lucky Millinder, and R&B star Bull Moose Jackson.

Good Performance Of 50s Style hard bop
Scott Williams | Oakland, CA United States | 06/08/2008
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Overview:

Hank Frank is a 1950s style hard bob album. All the songs on the CD are performed well and there is nothing not to like on this album. However, there also is nothing really to get too excited about either. Nothing really novel is being done here. The arrangements of the standards are pretty straight forward. It is just a pair of legends beautifully playing some classics and some new songs. The mood of the album is fairly laid back and happy. The group is made up of Jones on pino, Wess on flute and sax, Micky Roker on drums, bassist John Webber, and guitarist Ilya Lushtak. The tracks with Wess on sax tend to be at a higher level than the tracks where he plays flute.

Song Highlights:

You Made a Good Move: This track opens up some just a piano bass drums trio,a and then picks up steam when Wess comes up with his energetic theme. Very nice, and catchy

Autumn Serenede: This song has a bossa nova, shuffle beat and is very subdued. There is some beautfilly interplay between guitarist Lushtak and Wess. Laid back and relaxing.

All or Nothing At All: Of the cover songs, this has the most unique arragement. Wess emphasizes the first node of the melody with a hard hitting blast. It works well and adds a small twist to the standard."
