Synopsis

This performance could have been nicknamed "The Pocket-Sized Messiah," as it uses a very small orchestra and choir. But far from sounding small, the singers imbue the music with such life, and the choruses have such amazing contrapuntal clarity, that the ear simply never gets tired or impatient with the scale of the performance. Indeed, a small group obviously going full-out is a hell of a lot more exciting than a big group making a loud, amorphous noise. Maybe not a first choice, but at mid-price, worth it if you're having more than one. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

If you love Lynne Dawson, buy this.

"The orchestra here really is a weak point. The number of players must be small. The choir is nice, agile, but what is best, is Lynne Dawson. Her voice is full of joy. Her voice IS joy. I have not heard a better soprano soloist in any Messiah."
Almost perfect

"This recording has really grown on me. Lynne Dawson is as wonderful as other reviewers on this page have testified, but the whole performance is excellent. Yes, it is small scale, but that simply adds to the sense of wonder of Messiah's many intimate moments. All the performance lacks is just a little extra punch here and there, that last ounce of excitement - otherwise the orchestra and choir perform with clarity and brightness. A recording well worth getting to know."
Great soprano

"Lynne Dawson's "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" is in itself worth the price of this recording. I own more than 30 complete Messiahs, and her Redeemer is by far the best on the allegedly-historical instrument recordings. This isn't Dawson singing Handel. It's Handel speaking to us through Dawson. Her technique, diction, and ornamentation are magnificent. But what really distiguishes her is her selfless sincerity. If you buy this one, you will always be glad you did."
