A Stunning Performance
R. Gard | Beacon Falls, CT | 01/26/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Whether you enjoy opera, Baroque style, the harpsichord, Handel, or virtouso performance, you will enjoy this CD. "La Resurrezione," composed in 1708 while Handel visited Rome, is a pleasing work on every level. Handel obviously loved it, for he re-used its themes and arias for the rest of his life.Ton Koopman and his musical forces deliver a stunning performance from a rare autograph score which Handel modified and used himself at the first performance. Koopman's tempi are on the fast side for some scholars, but I find that everything sparkles, especially the final choruses "II Nume vincitor" and "Diasi lode in Cielo", as well as the joyful yet sensuous aria of Magdelena "Ho un non so che nel co."Lucifer is well accompanied by a raucous chorus of regals, and his arias are case studies of rage and violence in music. The beautiful pastoral soprano aria "Ferma l'ali" delivers the opposite affectation, exhibiting the extreme range of emotions created by Handel.Koopman's harpsichord is worth the entire cost of the CD alone. His playful anticipations and appoggiatura are absolutely delicious. The set includes a complete libretto and notes. I highly recommend this CD."
