What Were We Thinking?

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Hey - this is Charlee, the drummer for Halfcocked. I usually don't write record reviews for my own releases, but when I found this up on Amazon...Of course, (almost) everyone knows the story - we signed with Dreamworks by way of Spider-One of Powerman 5000 for our third release, "The Last Star", and that some of these songs were re-recorded for that album. Nevertheless, there's some things here that remind me of what we were going through in Boston at the time of these sessions. Some were great, some were horrible...but in the end, this is what we have to show through the trials and tribulations of being an independent band!We were fortunate to sign with Curve Of The Earth Records in December of 1997 for a 2-record deal that allowed COMPLETE creative freedom. This record was created under those conditions, and even though it seems a little dated in places, it showcases the freedom we had at the time - along with the brilliant work of Andrew Schneider (who also recorded "Audio" by The Blue Man Group, by the way), who believed in everything we ever did from the get-go.So why should you buy it? Most importantly, it keeps an independent record label in Boston (our hometown) in business! It also shows us in development, and what led to us being able to get the chance to record a major label release...there's some fun stuff here, and at the very least, it's something you can all hold against us when we tour! Bring this CD up and wave the evidence in our faces! Take care - and enjoy listening to the development of a band that's only hopes to get better!Yer pal, Charlee!"
