Synopsis

Album Description
Rare recordings of the music of this popular contemporary composer. Amazing choral virtuosity from the SWR Vocal Ensemble and director Marcus Creed. György Kurtág was long overshadowed by his fellow Hungarian György Ligeti, but in recent years his music has become far better known. Kurtág was the teacher of the renowned pianists András Schiff and Zoltán Kocsis at the Liszt Academy in Budapest.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Usually Ligeti gets most of the credit for being his country's most prominent composer of the last half of the twentieth century (since Bartok) but Kurtag deserves to be in the running - he stayed in obscurity during soviet times while Legeti relocated. Kurtag's works are very brief and expressive, elements he gets from carefully applying certain elements of Schoenberg, Bartok, Webern's expressive and atonal styles. Every modern choral technique is present in these works, from human noises to minimalism to vast blocks of sound. The poetry of the poems is also very expressive. Overall, there is a sense that these brief works have been carefully crafted and composed by a composer who has not only a vast palette of modern technique, but also an ability to express individually. I highly recommend these works and any of this obscure composer's works for the modern listener's consideration."
