This Collection From The Guess Who Is Average At Best!

(3 out of 5 stars)

"It's interesting how all these labels seem to be putting out mediocre collections lately. First there's the MCA Millennium Collection, Capitol's Classic Masters, Warner Bros. The Essentials and now RCA's Platinum & Gold Collection. This particular collection from Canada's The Guess Who has a mere 12 songs total and that's it. Sure there are some excellent hits on this compact disc, such as "These Eyes", "No Time", "Undun", and "Hand Me Down World" to name a few, but there are a number of average tracks such as "Runnin' Back To Saskatoon", "Sour Suite" and "Broken" which could have easily been replaced with better choices such as "Rain Dance", "Laughing",and "Share The Land". While I'm griping I might also add that "American Woman" is the short version not the full length album version. For the most part, many of these collections tend to leave one feeling short changed when it comes to value as well. For a little more money you can buy The Guess Who "Greatest Hits" (also on RCA & Remastered) which has eighteen songs, and is a much better collection. My advice, pass on this cd, which is only meant to put money into RCA's greedy pockets, and purchase a more complete collection of hits from this excellent Canadian rock band."
Pretty weak best of collection

"I usually try to stay away from the Universal "20th Century Masters" series of compilations, since they are usually pretty sad for best of mixes. I was a little leery about giving the BMG/RCA equivalent "The Platinum & Gold Collection" a try, but what the hell.

Their ad inside described the series as "a series of superstar compilations that feature the best-known songs from all-time favorite artists, along with rare photos, informative liner notes and digital remastering for the best sound possible. The #1 place to find the 'best of' is The Platinum & Gold Collection." I found this description to be false for the most part. The "rare" photos (4 of them) aren't really rare. It also doesn't feature all of The Guess Who's big hits. Most notably, "Laughing," "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature," "Share the Land," "Rain Dance," and "Clap for the Wolfman" are all missing.

Some people will be happy with this compilation. If you're anything like me, you are going to wish you had spent a couple more dollars and purchased "Greatest Hits (1999)" or "Anthology (2003)"."
