(5 out of 5 stars)

"Guadalupe, Our lady of the Roses is a beautiful recording of a wonderful new piece. James DeMars has composed a work, which has very successfully melded several cultures and their musics. He has woven together different languages (Spanish and English, some Aztec), instruments (traditional classical instruments with didgeridoo and Aztec and African percussion native American and Aztec flutes) and has created a very magical atmosphere, which brings us into the world of Juan Diego and his encounter with Our Lady of Guadaloupe. DeMars recounts this story with the help of some admirable performances by singers and instrumentalist. Isola Jones with her wonderfully expressive warm voice gives a haunting performance. Baritone Robert Barefield and tenor Robert Breault add tremendous strength to the piece, as does R. Carlos Nakai on his Native American flute. Carole FitzPatrick in the role of La Malinche is a highlight in this recording. She sings effortlessly and beautifully in every part of her voice with crystal clear diction and exceptional musicality.

Our Lady of the Roses is a fine musical example of our multi-faceted multicultural world.
