"Jerzy Maksymiuk is one of my favorite conductors. I particularly love his live recording of Rachmaninoff's The Isle of the Dead for BBC Music Magazine. This Grieg CD is outstanding. The Peer Gynt Suites are especially fine, with beautiful solo work and excellent ensemble. It is a rare pleasure to hear an orchestra associated with Hyperion on a budget priced disc. The BBC Scottish Symphony is one of the world's more underrated orchestras, a group that plays with delicacy and heart. The other works are excellent, too. I first heard the three pieces from Sigurd Jorsalfar on a Vox recording by Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony. That was a lovely version. Maksymiuk's version takes different tempos, but is very effective in its own right. The sound engineering is excellent, too, with just a touch of fuzziness in the tuttis. You may prefer to hear a version of Peer Gynt that includes music from outside the Suites, such as Oivin Fjeldstad's, but for what is on this CD you really can't do much better."
