CD ReviewsMusic by a great unknown The Delite Rancher | Phoenix, Arizona | 08/02/2005 (5 out of 5 stars) "This Ignace De Souza disc is a great introduction to an African gem. De Souza is best known for his Ghanaian Highlife, even though he was originally from Benin and played eclectic musical styles. In addition to Highlife, his diverse musical repertoire included the Cha Cha, Twist and Afro-Beat. While some tunes echo Township Jazz, others simply rock. Indeed, Igance De Souza's major legacy is that he introduced Ghana to that which would eventually be known as Soukous. The music on this disc ranges from De Souza's 1950's work in the Shambros Band, through the 60's with the Melody Aces and Black Santiagos. The vocals are in a variety of languages including English, Fanti, Twi, Fon and Ga. Released by John Storm Robert's venerable "Original Music" label, the disc comes with liner notes that would make any ethnomusicologist proud. While the music will have high appeal to those who enjoy old time E.T. Mensah style Highlife, listeners will be pleasantly surprised at how often Ignace De Souza blurred and mixed musical styles.
