Govinda's Magical Worlds Within
Alan Caylow | USA | 03/19/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Wow....I don't think an album has entranced me this much since the first Enigma album from 1990....no, change that: since 1994's "Pure" by The Golden Palominos....Anyway, I'm a total newbie to the music of Govinda (real name Shane O'Madden). I came across "Worlds Within" while it was playing in a music store recently, and I was instantly hooked on it. This is a *fantastic* album: hypnotic, seductive, sensual, hypnotising, atmospheric....in other words, the kind of music I absolutely go for. The way Govinda weaves dub, electronica, world, pop, and new age into one glorious tapestry of music is just breathtaking. I can't even spotlight a single track for you: "Worlds Within" comes across to me like a single, 53-minute musical opus divided into twelve parts. All I can tell you is that this is magnificently sensual music. Govinda is a brilliantly talented musician, composer & producer, and I definitely plan to check out some more of his work. In the meantime, buy "Worlds Within." Turn out the lights, and enjoy."
Govinda is evolving...

"Although the most recent offering from Govinda can barely hold a flame and keep it lit next to such masterpieces as 'Oh Earthly Gods', 'Entwined & Entranced', and maybe even 'Erotic Rhythms From Earth', I am happy to report that 'Worlds Within' is a step above Shane O'Madden's last studio recording, 'Echoes of Eden', which to me sounded rushed, uninspired, and rather disappointing to my biased ears. Coming from some other artist I probably would have enjoyed what I heard a lot more but in his case I have come to expect a certain standard of excellence and knew that he was capable of doing much better.

It was with the release of 'Erotic Rhythms From Earth' that I started detecting a slight shift in sound. However, after a brief hiatus, he emerged like a butterfly with a complete musical transformation (not to mention a new label), only he hasn't fully spread his wings yet. Now, I don't know whether that has anything to do with the change in style or not but if you were to listen to one of his earlier albums along with one of his newer ones back to back, you'd swear they were completely different groups (and please be aware that there are in fact two Govinda's here on Amazon). The only recognizable feature is his trademark violin playing. With 'Worlds Within' he seems to have put more effort into his work, though, as it sounds more thought-provoking and evocative. The chilled electronic beats are served fresh with some exotic gypsy/western (mostly Indian) influences, as well as the occasional female cooing that sound less like a watered down version of Karsh Kale and more like an evolution into something grand, and I am more than ready to embark on this journey.

The genious within multi-faceted Shane O'Madden has thus returned and is prayerfully here to awe us with further musings of enticing beauty and hypnotic world grooves.

"What a brilliant record! The downtemponess of this record infused with ambient electronica gives me chills. You have got to give this new Govinda cd more than one listen. The more you hear it the more it grows on you. An excellent blend of worldbeat elements with downtempo violin chillout allows this album to breathe from beginning to end. This is a journey into intoxication."
