CD Reviews

Grossman and Hackady at their best!
06/29/1998
(4 out of 5 stars)

"A delightful score by the under-rated Grossman and Hackady (MINNIE'S BOYS). Compelling story from an historical viewpoint, Ann Reinking as Joan of Ark and Joel Grey as Charlie are a great pairing. This CD is a must for collectors of Broadway shows."
One of the Greatest Theatrical Scores!

"I have over 150 showtunes and this is at the very top of the list! So the lyrics aren't those of Sondheim, but they are close behind and the music is way ahead! Larry Grossman's tunes are wonderful and though I'm not a joel Grey fan, he does do a great job in this peice. Ann Reinking, as always, is a goddess! GOODTIME CHARLEY is just that: a goodtime!"
A pretty darned good musical

"I was one of the relatively few who attended a performance during its very short run on Broadway. I loved the show...especially the score.A few days ago, I picked up an LP of the Original Broadway Cast recording. I hadn't heard the thing since my having seen it on stage more than twenty-five years ago.I was delighted to find that the score was/is as wonderful as I had remembered it to be.As I recall from the performance I attended, the book is a bit wanting.
But Grey and Reinking were wonderful. They just about made the whole thing work. This is a musical which should be given another go on stage. But since that's very unlikely; the best we can do is to hear the Original Cast recording on LP or (even better) on CD."
