CD Reviews

Gongzilla stretching out even more!
Ryan Wojno | 01/19/2009
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Jazz rock with a jam band twist? For years now, Gongzilla has been known as a jazzrock fusion sensation. More recently however, the band has been spending time on the jam band circuit playing with such household jammers as moe. and Umphrey's McGee. The influence is clear on their newest record "Five Even" as the band has become a bit more "Grateful Dead" and far less "Return to Forever" than ever before. I review this disk with mixed emotions, especially after seeing the band perform this past summer. While their live show certainly was a smoker, this collection of tunes leaves something to be desired in my mind (especially with their summer performance at 3RP fresh in my memory). Highlights are the instrumental "French Grass" featuring Chuck Garvey of moe. and "American Dream" featuring Jake Cinninger of UM on guitar. The album just might be worth it for these two tracks alone. The rest of the album however, if enjoyed by the listener, is a sweet bonus. Do not miss the chance to see Gonzilla live at any chance though as Bon Lozaga and Mike Miz absolutely shine on stage. I would best describe their current outfit as a more progressive and jazzy feeling Allman Brothers."
