I have the Musical Heritage Society CD of Vladimir Feltsman's 1991 performance of the Goldberg Variations recorded at the Moscow Conservatory, and have twice ordered additional copies to hand out to my friends as gifts. One of those is a Russian emigre and he agrees strongly with my assessment.
There is a sparkling mathematical precision to Bach that is brought out vividly by Feltsman. Glenn Gould's historic performance seems sloppy and careless by comparison." |
