CD Reviews

Gnawa Diffusion's Excellent North African Jazzy Sound

"A few years ago I was in Essaouira, Morocco in a tiny *superb* French restaurant that was playing the most amazing Arabic Jazz. I was completely entranced (indeed, only the fabulous choclate mousse grabbed my attention away from the music). I'm a dedicated fan of Arabic music loving everything from Classical to popular styles. I'm a huge fan of jazz. The combination of the two really stuck with me; the sounds became a soundtrack of the journey. I asked the waiter what was playing. As it turned out, it was a different mix of artists and the one that stayed in my head (did I have a blank tape with me? No. But I've learned my lesson and carry them now) was Gnawa Diffusion. It took me a while to actually find this cd, but once I did, I became a dedicated fan. I think I'll put the cd on right now!The sound is laid back and even though the title is Algeria, it reminded me of life in Essaouira, slow and steady, with a strong breeze. It's something I can listen to over and over and not tire of it at all. It's a "user-friendly" cd, not because it is watered down in style or flavour, but because it's simply so easy to listen to. It maintains a elegant exoticness. Definitely a summertime album: kick back, throw open the windows and chill with Gnawa Diffusion."

"I bought this album in Morocco and it was one of the first Rai albums that I ever listened to... The album is excellent; they combine a lot of different styles, traditional North African, Carribean, western pop. If you want to hear something catchy yet different, have a listen. I recommend this album over Bab El Oued Kingston, although if you like this one definitely get that one as well. Happy listening."
