Excellent germanic performance of a great dramatic opera

"Mozart seems to have felt about Gluck the way most of us feel about Mozart. He wrote that he felt transported out of himself with joy and awe when he listened to Gluck's operas. The influence this piece had on him, as well as on Beethoven and Wagner is easy to hear in this recording. The musicians deliver a powerful, tough-minded performance, particularly Joanna Blatter as Clytemnestra facing the prospect of her daughter's sacrificial murder. Also impressive are Helmut Krebs as the fiery Achilles, and Josef Greindl as the priest charged with carrying out the sacrifice. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau acts convincingly as Agamemnon, the principal baritone."
