A MYTHICAL REBIRTH
Angel Villanueva | Los Angeles, CA | 12/18/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Gloria Trevi's new contribution to the music world is stronger than any of her previous works. The lyrics, vocals and acoustic sets are honest, staightforward and powerful. The hauntingly beautiful and dramatic "Horas Tranquilas" alone is worth the price of this album. But there are plenty of goodies here: with the fun, high-energy "Nieve de Mamey" La Trevi once again has her way with the machos of America and manages to shock even those of us who were familiar with her rebellious and unpredictable nature. Considering her recent situation, it's a fantastic thing to realize: Gloria Trevi is having fun.

Among other things, La Trevi addresses love, family, the social reality of Mexico, the loss of her daughter (the sad, hopeful and beautifully sung "Timbres Postales al Cielo"), lust, ambition, and in a magnificient closing number, the human will to survive in the face of adversity: "En Medio de la Tempestad" is Gloria's way of inviting us to fearlessly brave the storm and walk into a brighter tomorrow, with a smile on our face and not a trace of doubt.

Gloria's compositions, her words when interviewed, and her total and direct connection with the public and herself when performing paint a clear picture of her nature: she is the real thing, a bona fide artist. She is never, ever, ever pretending to be something she's not, a habit that her contemporaries (think Thalía, Paulina Rubio, etc.) engage in as standard practice. Gloria Trevi is who she is, original, unabashed and unapologetic. She has lived Dante's Divine Comedy, and it shows: through her personal hell the woman has gained wisdom and strenght, and oddly, the tremendous injustice she suffered has not made her grown bitter or lose even a fragment of the spice, power and magic that led her to conquer the masses in the first place. This album showcases it all, untouched and ready for us to dive into.

When Gloria Trevi was unjustly incarcerated it literally felt like a major fragment of Latin American pop culture went to prison with her. It's disturbing to hear that she had to wait in jail for five years until all the factors came into play for her innocence to be proven. The ongoing success of this album gives us hope, and her vindication is our own: we have been given back that which was taken from us by the disorganized and donwright frightening judicial system of Latin America. "Cómo Nace el Universo" is, as one of my friends called it, a real life happy ending."

"Gloria really let's her music talk in this new release. Even her image has shown how much she has changed. Here's my breakdoen of the songs on the album...

Como Nace El Universo- I wouldn't have picked this song as the opening for the album. It's a nice soothing song to listen to. Not my favorite. 3/5

Eres Un Santo- I love this song. My favorite on the album. I think this song is one of her best ever. It has awesome lyrics, and great music to go with it. 5/5

Nieve de Mamey- This song takes me back to her old music. I don't like it because I don't think it goes with the album. This is supposed to be a new album with a new sound and this song doesn't cut it. 2/5

Senor Presidente- Nice soothing song. Not the best. 3/5

Metida Hasta El Cuello- I like this song. It's a nice song to cruise too and just sing along to. Great lyrics. 4/5

Timbres Postales Al Cielo- Beautiful song. Enough said. 4/5

Horas Tranquilas- This song is awesome. I love the arrangement and mood of this song. Very mysterious. I love it. 5/5

La Nota Roja- I don't really like this song. Too much like her old stuff. 2/5

El Domador- It's a fun sexy song to listen to. Catchy! 3/5

Sexo y Dinero- This song is awesome. I like the whole sex sounding music. Very catchy, and her voice sounds cool. 4/5

Poder y Fama- This song needs some work. Reminds me of this old song she did. 2/5

En Medio de la Tempestad- This song is beautiful. She really shows her vocals at the beginning. Loving it. 5/5

Overall, this album is a deffinate growth. She's destined to many more hits. Go Gloria!!!!

I averaged my ratings and the album gets 3.5 Stars

What a dream, new Gloria music

"If in 2003 I was told that next year I would see Gloria Trevi free AND hear a new album, I would have laughed and said "Yeah right". What a crazy year this has been, as we have seen a lunatic gun-happy president destroy this country and re-elected, and now, Gloria Trevi free and back in full form, after we all thought her to be forever enclausterated.

"Como Nace El Universo" marks the return of Gloria Trevi to music. After all that was said and done, we cannot deny that Gloria was and still is a tortured artist who verbalized her pain in song for our amusement and observations. This CD is no exeption to her adventurous legacy.

Produced by Armando Avila, the album is everything that is Gloria, rough, disorganized and beautifully painful. Once she cried of mistreatment and deceit, today, nothing has changed. The characters may have come and gone, but Gloria is forever probing herself and producing material that will entice all to probe themselves. From longing for love from the wrong person ("Eres Un Santo" "Volveria A Buscarte") to her typical blunt male views ("Nieve De Mamey"), Gloria once again makes an album that is a mirror, where everyone can see a part of themselves.

Spending 5 years in jail have not broken Gloria at all. Whether she was guilty at all, the question was never about her music and that is where I think people will have difficulty in separating the two. I hope for the best for Gloria, for I have much more respect to her artistry now, for having the courage to smile at the world when public opinion would rather spit in her face. Music needs her."
