CD Reviews

Miller Time updated to the 1960s
R. Riis | NY | 06/02/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Two 12-track LPs from the mid-1960s on one CD. Of course, Glenn Miller had been gone for 20 years by the time these tracks were recorded, but Miller alumnus Ray McKinley did a fine job of recreating the Miller sound with banks of reeds and trombones. "Glenn Miller Time - 1965" captures that sound marvellously well on an instrumental mix of rerecorded Miller favorites like "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "Serenade in Blue", and "Pennsylvania 6-5000", and contemporary hits like "Call Me Irresponsible", "Hello, Dolly", and "More". Trumpter Bobby Hackett, the estimable soloist of the old Jackie Gleason Orchestra, adds considerable color to these songs. "Great Songs of the 60s" sticks to contemporary material and adds some choral vocals in a Modernaires vein. Some of the uptempo numbers seen slightly un-Miller-like, but overall this is fine, fine collection. Tracks : Call Me Irresponsible, Chattanooga Choo Choo, Blue Velvet, Elmer's Tune, Serenade in Blue, Hello, Dolly, The Girl from Ipanema, At Last, More, Moonlight Cocktail, Pennsylvania 6-5000, Canadian Sunset, Red Roses for a Blue Lady, Everybody Loves Somebody, People, Wives and Lovers, Love Me with All Your Heart, Downtown, Mr. Lonely, If I Loved You, Dominique, Dear Heart, Washington Square, There! I've Said It Again."
