With his unique power to communicate he reached and deeply moved vast numbers people previously untouched by classical music, while continuing to enthrall and stimulate many of the greatest musicians in the world. Especially noted for his interpretations of Bach, he gave up performing in public in 1964, devoting himself entirely to recordings which continue to mesmerise listeners with their magical immediacy.
