"GK&P recorded five albums (including a Xmas colleciton) during their stint at Columbia Records in the eighties. While failing to garner any massive hits, this best of package is a reminder that they turned out some durable, satisfying music in this period. As she had at Buddha Records, during the mid-seventies, Gladys veered further away from her Motown persona. There's no angry/scorned/pleading Gladys here. Lyrics filled with optimism are the order of the day on songs like Landlord, I Will Fight, My Time, Hero and You're Number One. In one instance--A Friend Of Mine--Gladys's man has left her (for one of her own girlfriends!) but Gladys sounds more like she's kicking herself than lashing out at him. Songwriters and producers, notably Ashford & Simpson and Leon Sylvers, crafted danceable, glossy tracks, that while not downright funky (a la Friendship Train or On & On) can still make you want to pop your fingers. Save The Overtime, co-written and produced by Gladys and Bubba Knight went all the way to number one on the black music charts. The Pips are customarily smooth and supportive throughout, if a little less imaginative than they had been in the past. The most prized selection here for many may be Still Such A Thing from 1980 where Gladys meditates on the state of love. Her contrast of full-throated cries with falsetto swoops makes for a thrilling climax. Others will vote for Bourgie Bourgie with its percolating groove and rare social commentary. I'm guessing Sony included live versions of the group's classic Motown and Buddha hits because of their name recognition. While Gladys sounds a little fatigued during this concert, there is undeniable excitement there."
