Synopsis

Amazon.com essential recording
To appreciate the Gipsy Kings, a live concert is almost a necessity. If the prospect of being surrounded by screaming, sweaty hordes is unnerving, here's a vicarious way to experience the ambiance of a Gipsy Kings performance at no risk to life and limb. A fiery version of "Bamboleo" is among the CD's standouts, as are "Djobi Djoba," "Trista Pena," "Sin Ella" (the studio version appeared on the soundtrack to Peter Weir's Fearless), and "Allegria." The singing Reyes brothers and their guitar-picking Baliardo cousins cast all caution to the wind and audibly demolish the audience's inhibitions. It's not background listening but is guaranteed to galvanize any party. --Christina Roden

CD Reviews

A brilliant intro to the Gipsy Kings
02/27/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This was the first Gipsy Kings albumm I ever bought and now stands with a collection of eight of their albums. As the reviewer said, an appreciation of the Gipsy Kings is only really gained through a concert (my first experience about 20 years ago) but this album comes as close to that experience as most will want. The music is alive and very catchy so listeners should be prepared for 75 minutes of constant "on the go" music. The musical and singing harmony of the group (and tempo of their performance)is really only appreciated by witnessing it in person but don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting to clap or tap in time with the music and then go out and buy another of their works."
GREAT!!!

"Happy - sad. Slow - fast. Relaxed - involved. It will bring up all kinds of feelings. It's absolutely wonderful!!! I've recently seen them Live - and this CD comes as close to the real thing as possible."
The best primer, a great addition to the old hand

"this the album to get if you're just starting out with the gypsy kings - or a lover of their studio work. it's a great primer of their whole collection - jewels just waiting to be found. a live version of all their biggest hits to the date, it's a perfect intro of the gypsy house of love. all of it in perfectly mastered sound and pumping rhythm.

the best of the best is here: Djobi Djoba, Habla Me (moving and beautiful redition), Bem, Bem, Maria, Mauro, and their mammoth USA hit Bamboleo. it's a full panoramic view of the gypsy kings, the whole of the singing, playing, dancing family - from the 'forlorn love' to the upbeat pulsing flamingo. this is sing-along "got to dance" latin romance, straight from the real gypsies of the south of france. almost as good as seeing them live. the guitar work here is amazing and i'd be hard pressed to find such a talented group who sings with such enthusiasm and skill. nothing is contrived here. nothing feels false about their sound or playing. i know all the words and can't speak of lick of spanish. interesting enough, it's also worth is to check out their patriarch jose reyes in french and them move on to their album 'love and liberte.' be warned: gypsy king fans are pretty undying in their love for the band, and this album puts you in jeopardy of becoming one."
